A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT : LENORE RS LIM Year 2010 was another remarkable year for SPAA. The 17th Annual Art Exhibit was successfully held at the Philippine Center with the participation of many new members, whose entries complemented the works of our seasoned members. The joint art exhibit with the American Society of Contemporary Artists during the year was another equally proud achievement which brought together artists from two respectable New York art organizations, in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding. And, individually, we have various members who came out with new books or received awards from national and international art competitions. We have to take our hats off to Tenni for her energetic and dedicated stewardship. This year we are off to a good start. Members of the Board met with the new Philippine Consul General in a courtesy call arranged by yours truly. Consul General Mario L. de Leon who was joined by his deputy, Consul Millie Thomeczek, and the cultural officer, Ms. Marivic Dimaculangan, were briefed on the history of SPAA, goals and objectives as well as planned projects for this year. Consul Gen. de Leon was presented with copies of the art books of the SPAA and one on Manuel Rodriguez, one of the founders & first president of SPAA. In response, Con. Gen. de Leon assured the group of his total support and cooperation in all our forth-coming activities. The visit also resulted in a discussion on planning a series of Artist Talks jointly with the Philippine Consulate and SPAA. As customary, we will have our Annual Picnic this August. In addition, during the occasion, we plan to launch our first On-Line Auction where we will feature SPAA members’ works. In effect, this will provide the vehicle for the members to have their art works enjoy a potential and much wider audience. There is also another good reason to be excited about Year 2011. We have a Board that is very committed to work hard and to make our organization financially competent to undertake projects in the future. They have come up with the new concept of making this year’s 18th Annual Art Exhibit opening night a Gala Affair and a fund-raising event. And, during the duration of the art exhibit, a series of Artist Talks will be held for the benefit of anyone interested to know more about the individual artist-presenters and their art. This is my second time to be president of our SPAA. Shall we all make it better and sweeter for all of us, my second time around? ♣
